Together with Challenge Events (Pty) Ltd, local rights holders, WorldSport rolled out the red carpet for the inaugural CHALLENGECAPETOWN which took place Sunday 10 November 2019, featuring a weekend of sporting events which comprised of an open water swim race, a family fun run, and the first middle distance triathlon (1.9km swim, 90km cycle and 21km run) to take place within the Cape.
The main race comprised of a cold water swim in Big Bay, a flat and fast cycle route that included 3-laps along the scenic Otto du Plessis Drive, stretching between Dolphin Beach and the Atlantic Golf Estate and culminating in a thrilling, yet unique ride into the City and through the Company’s Garden. The historic, undulating run was completed over three laps which took runners through the Zonnebloem and District Six precincts, passing some of the City’s most historical buildings and iconic landmarks such as Parliament, City Hall and the Castle of Good Hope.
But the weekend wasn’t all about the triathletes, budding cold water swimmers were also given a chance to compete against each other in a series of open water swim races at Big Bay, on Saturday 9 November. The open water swim welcomed competitors of all ages and disciplines to test their skills in the chilly ocean waters. For budding and casual runners, a 5km fun run was held on Sunday morning, before the main race kicked off. The run course took athletes through the Company’s Garden and gave them a chance to experience the thrill of finishing on the red carpet.
Spectators and families of athletes were treated to a buzzing race village at the Cape Town High School sports fields, with Table Mountain as the backdrop, where they enjoyed live music, food, kids’ activities and more.
